SCR – exhaust aftertreatment system by spraying AdBlue aqueous solution into the vehicle exhaust system to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere to a level corresponding to the Euro 5 standard.
The Euro 5 environmental standard has been introduced in European countries since 2009. According to the standard, manufacturers of heavy and other equipment are required to provide products with a system capable of meeting the standards of harmful substances in exhaust gases.
Most manufacturers have chosen the exhaust gas neutralization system (SCR). Often, you can hear such terms:

Typically, using such names, we are talking about SCR.
The system is installed on all types of trucks and heavy machinery – main tractors, dump trucks, buses, construction equipment, industrial engines (diesel generators, etc.), marine engines. In other words, the machinery or plant equipped with a diesel engine will be equipped with an exhaust aftertreatment system.

The SCR control unit calculates the amount of solution required for the injection, taking into account the parameters of the engine at the current moment and the catalyst temperature. The calculated amount of liquid is injected through the injector or dosing module. The NOx sensor is used to monitor the quality of the exhaust aftertreatment. For information about the operation of the engine control unit SCR has a connection with the engine control unit over the network to the CAN bus.
With the CAN bus, the control units communicate with each other and make requests to change the parameters necessary to ensure the operation of the entire system.
For effective operation of SCR it is necessary to maintain the catalyst temperature above 300 degrees. SCR does not have the ability to independently increase the catalyst temperature to the desired value – therefore, to increase the temperature values, the control unit (5) on the can bus makes a request for the enrichment of the fuel mixture into the engine control unit (8). This achieves the desired temperature value.
Modes of the SCR system
⦁ Fuel mixture enrichment
This mode is necessary to warm up the catalyst and maintain the required temperature of the catalyst during SCR operation
⦁ Torque limit
Activated when a fault occurs in SCR. When this mode is activated, the SCR yellow or red fault indicator lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard, while the vehicle power is limited to 40%
⦁ Idle speed increase
Mode required for heating the catalyst at idle. The speed of XX will be increased until the required temperature is reached.
Operation of the neutralization system (AdBlue)
For proper operation, it is necessary to maintain a certain level of AdBlue liquid in the SCR solution tank, while special attention should be paid to the quality of the AdBlue solution.
Also, the owner of the vehicle or equipment must periodically carry out maintenance: replacement of the liquid filter, diagnosis in order to identify faults.
The reasons for the failure of SCR
⦁ Malfunction of electronic system sensors: catalyst temperature, NOx, AdBlue fluid pressure
⦁ Faulty electrical circuits of the control unit SCR
⦁ The use of poor-quality AdBlue solution, which can not provide the necessary post-treatment of exhaust gases; the presence of third-party liquids in the AdBlue solution (for example, diesel fuel) can lead to the failure of the pump, the coking of the mains, the nozzle, the dispenser.
The occurrence of any of these faults leads to a limitation of the engine torque.
Ways to disable SCR (urea shutdown)
The Euro 5 system is thoroughly studied and the market can offer you several options to disable SCR Euro 5. Among these options there are high-quality, reliable solutions, but also there are fakes or frankly outdated, inefficient solutions.
SCR is disabled programmatically by making changes to the vehicle’s firmware.
“+” is a fairly reliable shutdown method
“-” not all brands of vehicles support software shutdown
“-” on some vehicles such as Scania, when you programmatically disable SCR, the car display will display errors that are impossible to put out (and SCR will be completely disabled)
“-” on some vehicle models (Scania, Renault, Volvo), a warm-up function may be activated after a software shutdown, increasing the idle speed.
